Kids' Quest Illusion Confusion Kids' Quest Party

Illusion Confusion exhibit will confuse your senses
Grand Opening Kids’ Quest 5-7 p.m. July 16

Illusion Confusion, the Arts & Science Center’s newest hands-on kids’ science exhibit, will host its Grand Opening 5-7 p.m. Thursday, July 16, at the Center.

Illusion ConfusionThe main message of Illusion Confusion is that the world is not always what it seems and helps teach children to be discerning about what their senses tell them – to create little scientists with scientific minds. A very social exhibit, Illusion Confusion draws people together as they experience the different stations — Social Light, the Anti-Gravity Mirror, Disappearing Act, Through the Looking Glass and more.

If you have a child between the ages of 5-12 sign them up for Kids' Quest and let them become a part of the fun!

Take Off on an Arkansas Museum Road Trip and Win!Arkansas Museum Road Trip

Interested in the sport of geocaching or learning the origins of Arkansas’ geology? Or how about testing the limits of physics or exploring science in your own back yard? These are just some of the exciting experiences that are part of the Arkansas Museum Road Trip exhibits! Beginning July 16, visit one of the Network’s seven museum partner museums and collect virtual puzzle pieces to be entered for a chance to win a two-night stay at an Arkansas State Park and other cool prizes. Participants collecting all seven pieces, one from each museum, will automatically double their number of entries in the contest. These unique, interactive exhibits will tour the state, visiting each museum partner over the next three years. No matter where you live, there’s something for everyone on the Arkansas Museum Road Trip! Contest rules and details will be posted on July 10.

Create Your Own Downhill Race!

Two cylinders that look the same may roll down a hill at different rates.

Two objects with the same shape and the same mass may behave differently when they roll down a hill. How quickly an object accelerates depends partly on how its mass is distributed. A cylinder with a heavy hub accelerates more quickly than a cylinder with a heavy rim.

  • 2 identical round metal cookie tins (such as those from butter cookies).
  • 10 large metal washers (about 1/4 pound [112 g] each).
  • Double-sided foam stick-on tape (or adhesive-backed Velcro™).
  • A ramp

Arrange five of the washers evenly around the outside rim of the bottom of one tin. Stack five washers in the middle of the bottom of the second tin. In both cases, secure the washers with tape or Velcro™. Place both tins at the top of the ramp. Be sure the tops are on. Ask your friends to predict which tin will reach the bottom of the ramp first. Release the tins and let them roll down the ramp. The tin with the mass closer to the center will aDownhill Race at Newton's Cornerlways reach the bottom first. Try the experiment again, placing the washers in different locations in the tins. How do the different placements affect the movement of the tins? Why?Newton's Corner

Visit Newton's Corner at Mid-America Science Museum for more fun with physics!
