Can a "Raspberry" Make a Light Wiggle?

Bronx Cheer BulbSee if you can make the lights wiggle! Take a digital radio or clock radio that uses LEDs (red numbers), or a circuit tester with an LED on it, or a neon glow lamp available, such as a GE Guide lamp (any nightlight labeled "1/4 watt"). You'll also need an extension cord.

Plug in your light source and observe from 3-10 feet away. Give it a "raspberry." (a rude noise made by blowing air through your lips.) Notice that the light seems to wiggle back and forth and flicker. The LEDs or neon glow tube aren't really moving at all when you give the "raspberry.' Instead, your body vibrates, including your eyes. LEDs flash on and off 60 times a second (a neon glow tube 120 times a second), so fast that your eyes can't separate the "blinks." But when your body is vibrating, your eyes are in a different position each time the bulb flashes. As the image of the bulb traces a path across your eyes, it looks like the bulb is moving and flickering.
