SCIENCE RECYCLED: WHY DOES A HOVER CRAFT HOVER?

Come out for a fun afternoon of science that uses recycled materials such as CDs and water bottle caps and: build a hover craft and understand about air flow; build an air-powered cardboard race car and see how far you can make it go; use a common household item to create a Bernoulli Blower; and learn why things float in a wind tunnel.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED - Please RSVP by September 19. This event is free and open to the first 75 Kids' Quest members. Parents are encouraged to stay and “learn to play” as the kids “learn to play.”  A light snack will be served and the kids get to keep the craft that they make. Due to limited space, only the registered Kids' Quest members ages 5 to 12 will be allowed in the activity area.

Grossology Burp GuyGrossology - It's a Gas!

There is always some gas in your stomach. When you eat & drink, you swallow air & add to the gas. When your stomach digests, it adds acid & creates more gas. When gas pressure gets too great, gas escapes — BuRRRRP! A toot isn’t a backward burp. Bacteria in your large intestine break down food and produce gas. The gas escapes in a toot.

Make Your Own Gas!
Materials: vinegar, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), large balloon, funnel, spoon

This is messy, so do it over a sink or a washtub! Put some vinegar (representing stomach acid) into the balloon (your stomach). Use the funnel to add baking soda. The reaction represents what happens when your stomach acids react with food to produce gas. Pinch the balloon neck closed with your fingers (this represents the sphincter in your esophagus). Watch the “stomach” fill with gas. Release the “sphincter” to let the gas go in a belch!

ASU MuseumGrossology is based on the children’s best-selling book, Grossology by Sylvia Branzei. It explores all the slimy, mushy, oozy, scaly and stinky gross (yet scientific) things that occur everyday in the human body. Kids love the “gross stuff” and parents like the scientific explanations. Grossology will be at the ASU Museum September 16, 2008 to January 4, 2009. Come enjoy the Members-Only Gala on September 13 (for ASU Museum membership information, call Jill Kary at 870-972-2074).

Sharp is presenting sponsor of Grossology at ASU Museum; the exhibit is also sponsored by Niche, KAIT8, Chick-fil-A, and Occasions Publishing Group, along with statewide sponsor, Arkansas Children's Hospital. The Grossology exhibit is created & produced by Advanced Animations L.LC. in collaboration with Science World British Columbia.
